Medicare Annual Election Period Ends December 7

The 2018 Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) will be coming to an end on December 7.  Medicare beneficiaries have until this date to choose a new Medicare Advantage or Stand Alone Part D plan for the 2018 plan year.

If your client did not choose a new plan during AEP but they wished they had, they still may have an opportunity to join if they have a Special Election Period (SEP).

Some common qualifiers for a SEP are:

  • Leaving employer-group coverage (voluntary or involuntary)
  • Qualifying for Part D subsidy programs, such as low-income subsidy (LIS) or NYS Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC), or losing eligibility for them
    • NYS EPIC is an option for many people as it is fairly easy to qualify
  • Moving in or out of a plan’s service area
