September is National Cholesterol Education Awareness Month

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) in November 1985. The goal of the NCEP is to contribute to reducing illness and death from coronary heart disease (CHD) in the United States by reducing the percentage of Americans with high blood cholesterol.

Too much cholesterol in the blood is one of the main risk factors for heart disease and stroke—leading causes of death in the United States. One way to prevent these diseases is to detect cholesterol and treat it when it is found. And yet, most adults with high cholesterol don't have their condition under control. Two out of 3 adults have high cholesterol—or high LDL "bad" cholesterol.
