Information about the Cyberattack Affecting Premera Blue Cross
You may have heard in the news this week that another national Blue Cross Blue Shield-related health plan, Premera, reported an apparent cyber-attack, so we’d like to share what we know.
Premera Blue Cross, operating in the states of Washington and Alaska, reported on March 17 that it was the victim of a sophisticated cyber-attack. Earlier this year, Anthem, another company that owns several Blue Cross Blue Shield companies in other states, also was the target of a cyber-attack. The FBI is investigating both attacks.
Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is an independent BCBS company that operates in upstate New York. Our member's security is very important to us and we heavily invest to protect it.
Premera reported that it is working with investigators. It intends to notify any members of its own and any other members of other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans whether anyone gained unauthorized access to data containing any of their personal information.
Excellus BlueCross BlueShield is monitoring the situation closely, and we will act in any way necessary for the protection of our membership.
If anyone wants to track the latest developments from Premera, it has set up a dedicated website for this issue where it is also offering two years of credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to any Blue Cross Blue Shield member concerned about the possibility of their information being compromised.
