Preventing Diabetes and Raising Awareness During National Diabetes Month

Did you know that at least one in every 14 people has diabetes? Although there is no cure for diabetes, it can be managed by controlling blood sugar through careful meal planning, exercise, and possibly medicines.

According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and another 79 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Staying at a healthy weight, eating healthy foods, and getting regular exercise may reduce your risk of prediabetes and diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong disease that happens when the pancreas can't make enough insulin and/or the body's tissues can't use insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body's cells use sugar (glucose) for energy. It also helps the body store extra sugar in muscle, fat, and liver cells. Without insulin, the sugar can't get into the cells to do its work. It stays in the blood instead. This can cause high blood sugar levels. A person has diabetes when the blood sugar stays too high too much of the time.
