Health Care Reform Impacts to your Medicare Advantage plan

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), passed into law in March 2010, does not drastically affect your Medicare Advantage plan through Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. There are some changes as a result of the ACA, including:

Modified enrollment timelines

Prior to 2011, you could enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan from November 15 through December 31 and you could switch plans from January 1 through March 31.

The ACA changed this timeline. You can now enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan from October 15 through December 7 of each year. From January 1 through February 14 you can disenroll from your Medicare Advantage plan.

For more information view our Medicare Enrollment Timeline (PDF).

Lower out-of-pocket prescription drug costs

The Medicare Part D Coverage Gap (donut hole) will get smaller every year from 2011 through 2020. In 2013, in the coverage gap you pay 47.5% for covered brand name drugs and 79% for covered generics. In 2020, you will pay 25% for covered brand-name drugs and covered generics during the gap.

Free preventive screenings

Starting in 2012, Medicare Advantage plans cover certain preventive services, like an annual wellness exam, mammograms or colorectal screenings, without charging you. Learn more
